Opposition to WA uranium mining, despite Mega beatup

Mega beat up on uranium mining. Conservation Council WA & Anti-Nuclear Alliance  21 October 2009   Environment groups are standing strong with regional communities who are opposing uranium mining in WA, despite Mega Uranium and industry over-confidence.Natalie Lowrey, Uranium Free campaigner, Conservation Council of WA says, “Whilst the Barnett government and uranium industry attempt to fast track uranium projects in the state public opinion still holds strong against it.”“

This has been evident as alliances continue to grow and strengthen across the state which includes the call for the Uranium Public Inquiry. If the industry has nothing to hide then they should have nothing against an inquiry.”

Kate Vallentine, Anti-Nuclear Alliance of WA campaigner says, “We have been working with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community in Kalgoorlie this week, raising awareness about yellowcake coming through the community if these mines are approved.”

“Recently two Wongutha Elders joined a WA delegation to the 9th Australian Nuclear Free Alliance meeting. State wide and nationally community have major concerns about water, radioactive and cancer-causing waste and the transportation of this very dirty and risky mineral.”

One Response to “Opposition to WA uranium mining, despite Mega beatup”

  1. Judy Blyth Says:

The potential outomes of mining uranium are so immense and so different from mining any other ore. With WA on the brink of starting up uranium mining, it is essential that there be a full, transparent Public Inquiry looking at all implications at local to international levels.
