An important part of this move to make Australian homes greener are the tradespeople who install grid-connected solar energy systems in homes.
Clean Energy Council chief executive Matthew Warren says that, in mid-2008, there were “680 accredited installers” of solar photovoltaic panels. “Now we’re at 1300,” Warren says. “For every accredited installer, there are other people employed to support their work in the fast-growing sector.”
Recent research commissioned by the council found the impact of state and federal climate change policies would see Australia gain 28,000 jobs.
In a separate report, The Climate Institute says that if all the Australian clean energy projects – either planned, or already committed to – go ahead, this would create more than 26,000 new jobs. About 15,000 of these would come from the construction industry.
“Clean energy jobs are more about job growth in the energy sector,” Warren says.
Simon Winfield, regional director for energy recruitment consultants Hays Energy, says the clean-energy sector is “a big opportunity”.
“If I was a graduate or someone looking at the construction or engineering industries, then the renewable energy sector would be high up on my list as a potential career choice. The opportunities are going to increase heavily in the next 10 years.”
